From Castle to Crematory

In the city of North Bergen, just off 42nd Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard, stands a captivating and historically significant landmark—the Garden State Crematory. Established in 1907, it is the oldest operating businesses in North Bergen. With its striking Art Deco architecture and imposing presence, the crematory inspires wonder and intrigue in all who see it.

Originally constructed in the 19th century, the crematory was first known as Becker’s Castle. It quickly became the premier cremation site for local residents, as well as those traveling from across the Hudson River in New York City.

In 1907, a renovation project was undertaken to modernize this focal structure. This transformation led to the Garden State Crematory as we recognize it today, featuring unique and mesmerizing architecture that evokes a sense of melancholy both for those within and those who stand outside its walls.

Many famous and notable individuals have been cremated here, including Sid Vicious and Joan Rivers. With its deep historical roots, the Garden State Crematory remains an essential landmark—not only in Hudson County but throughout the entire state of New Jersey.
