Union City Native Oscar Nuñez Returns to NBC in “The Paper”

Oscar Nuñez, who spent his childhood in Union City, New Jersey, is returning to NBC this fall in the network premiere of “The Paper,” a mockumentary comedy and spinoff of “The Office.” The series begins its broadcast run on Monday, Nov. 10, at 8:30 p.m, with Nuñez reprising his role as Oscar Martínez, now working at a struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio.
Nuñez, born in Colón, Cuba, moved to Union City at age four and has long credited his East Coast upbringing for shaping his comedic voice. “Union City,” he once said, “It’s the beginning of ‘The Sopranos.’ When you grow up, you don’t know that, but it was all alleyways and concrete.”
Best known for his work on “The Office,” Nuñez also starred in and produced the Comedy Central series “Halfway Home.” His career began in New York comedy clubs and continued with the Groundlings in Los Angeles. He has appeared in numerous television shows, including “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Reno 911!,” and “Mr. Iglesias,” and won a Daytime Emmy for “The Office: The Accountants.”
“The Paper” premiered on Peacock on Sept. 4 and quickly became the streamer’s second-highest comedy launch. Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, the show features the same documentary crew from “The Office” as they follow a Midwestern newspaper’s efforts to stay afloat. Nuñez joins a cast that includes Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, and Melvin Gregg.
