Bayonne Bans Data Centers Citywide in Unanimous Council Vote

Bayonne Mayor Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski announced that an ordinance banning data centers in all zoning districts within the city has been passed and signed into law.

The ordinance, announced August 13, 2026, follows widespread criticism of data centers across New Jersey and within Bayonne. The Bayonne City Council passed the measure in a unanimous 5-0 vote on August 12.

The ordinance was introduced at the council’s July meeting. In it, the council determined that “in the interest of health, safety, and welfare of the residents of the City of Bayonne, it is appropriate at this time to amend the City Code to include data centers as a non-permitted use within the geographic boundaries of the City of Bayonne.”

The measure listed concerns about data centers, including limited permanent employment and development challenges related to electricity consumption, water use, and air quality.

“I want to thank the City Council for their partnership and consideration as we collectively answered the call to do what is in the best interest of Bayonne residents,” Ashe-Nadrowski said in a statement.

During the August 12 hearing, one resident raised concerns about the approval of data center construction on three sites before the ordinance passed. Bayonne Business Administrator Andrew Casais said that is unlikely to move forward, as additional approvals would be required.

Bayonne resident Jennah Reddick, who organized neighbors to push for the ban, said the outcome showed the power residents hold.

“This win in Bayonne is a win for everyone in New Jersey,” Reddick said. “We showed that the people can fight back and that we’re the ones who have power, not the developers. We came together as a community to fight back against corporate greed, even when we were told it was a losing battle, and we won.”
