County Weights and Measures Official Suspended Amid Financial Probe

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy has suspended Frank Alonso, acting superintendent of Weights and Measures, without pay following allegations that he diverted fines and registration fees to a private account he controlled.
“Since day one as County Executive, I have been committed to increased transparency and accountability in Hudson County government,” Guy said in a statement Tuesday. “Today, I authorized the county to immediately suspend Hudson County Weights & Measures Superintendent Frank Alonso without pay due to allegations of alarming irregularities regarding his duties and responsibilities. This matter has been referred to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, and there will be no further comment at this time.”
The New Jersey Globe reported that local businesses were instructed to write checks to “Hudson County Weights and Measures LLC,” an account tied to Alonso. He previously told officials annual revenue from registrations totaled $200,000 to $250,000, though a related trust account later showed $718,500.
The investigation reportedly began after Alonso left a Las Vegas hotel with tens of thousands in unpaid bills during a professional conference. Caesars claims he issued bounced checks and invalid credit cards. Three firearms were later found in his county office desk.
In October, the department was moved from the sheriff’s office to the law department. Alonso, a former Union City GOP chair, ran unsuccessfully for State Assembly in 2025 on a slate opposing the Hudson County Democratic Organization-backed candidates.
His termination remains pending civil service procedures.
