Solomon Gains Momentum from Former Opponents

In the lead-up to Jersey City’s December 2 mayoral runoff, Councilmember James Solomon has secured public support from two of his former opponents, Bill O’Dea and Mussab Ali. Both placed in the top four of the general election, and their endorsements mark a significant consolidation of support behind Solomon as the race narrows to two.

O’Dea, who finished third with 13,485 votes (21.50%), has been seen canvassing with Solomon. Ali, who placed fourth with 11,470 votes (18.29%), attended a Solomon campaign event following the election. Solomon led the first round with 18,339 votes (29.24%), followed by former Governor Jim McGreevey with 15,760 votes (25.13%), according to unofficial results from the Hudson County Clerk’s Office.

Solomon also received an endorsement this week from U.S. Senator Andy Kim.

“The voters in Jersey City have sent an unambiguous message tonight: they want change, they want affordability and they want a clean, ethical government that they can be proud of,” Solomon said on election night. He added, “The contrast in this runoff could not be clearer… Jim McGreevey is the living embodiment of the corrupt, failed, politicians of the past.”

McGreevey responded by emphasizing his record in public service. “What this race will be about is our records. Our records of accomplishment. Not what we say, but what we do,” he said from his campaign headquarters.

While Solomon has drawn new support from within the field of former mayoral candidates, McGreevey enters the runoff backed by major institutional figures including Governor Phil Murphy, State Senator and Union City Mayor Brian Stack, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy, the Hudson County Democratic Organization, and the Jersey City Police Officers Benevolent Association.
