Hoboken Police Warn of Jewelry Theft Scam, Seek Public’s Help

Hoboken police are warning residents about a distraction theft scam and asking for the public’s help identifying a vehicle and the people inside it.

According to police, the incident happened on August 12, 2026, on the 100 block of Madison Street. A woman in the back seat of an SUV asked a victim for directions, and after the victim helped, the woman placed a “gold chain” around the person’s neck, calling it a thank-you gift. After the SUV drove away, the victim realized their real chain had been removed and replaced with a fake one.

Police are urging residents to be cautious of this type of “distraction crime.” They advise never letting strangers get into your personal space or place jewelry or other items on your body, and to be wary of unsolicited requests or “gifts” from strangers.
