Caravan for a Free Cuba Travels from North Bergen to Union City

North Bergen served as the launchpad for the “Caravan for a Free Cuba” on Sunday, March 15, with a long parade of vehicles traveling down Bergenline Avenue draped in Cuban and American flags and banners.
Community leaders, local residents, and Township officials participated in the caravan. North Bergen Commissioner Hugo Cabrera said, “It’s time something change over there. They don’t have food. They don’t have electricity….its horrible.” HudPost’s own Willy Gonza, who is of Cuban descent, added, “Cubans have been under a dictatorship for more than 60 years…They are out in the streets protesting for their freedom. And we’re gonna be here standing in solidarity.”

Hundreds of bystanders shouted encouragement from the curb as the caravan traveled from 89th Street in North Bergen through neighboring municipalities and concluded on Hudson Avenue at the Cofradía de la Virgen de la Caridad in Union City. Organizers encouraged participants to decorate their vehicles and show support for freedom and democracy in Cuba. The event was promoted under the hashtags #FreeCuba, #CubaLibre, and #EndCommunism.
