Union City Soaring Eagles Advance to State Championship

Union City High School’s football team is set to make history after a commanding 42-0 win over East Orange in the NJSIAA Group 5 Semifinals on November 22. The victory crowned them the North Group 5 Sectional Champions and secured their spot in the Group 5 State Championship game, where they will face Toms River North on November 29.

This moment has been a year in the making for the Soaring Eagles. Last season, they advanced to the Group 5 State Championship but fell just short, losing 14-7 to Passaic Tech. This year, Union City turned the tables with a thrilling 34-29 victory over Passaic Tech in the North 2, Group 5 final, propelling them to the state semifinals.

The season began with a tough 42-18 loss to powerhouse St. Peter’s Prep, but the Soaring Eagles have been unstoppable since, embarking on a 10-game winning streak. Their journey has included decisive victories, such as a 61-10 semifinal rout of Bridgewater-Raritan, and a series of dominant defensive performances.

Union City’s statement win against East Orange highlighted both their offensive firepower and defensive strength. Head Coach Wil Valdez motivated his players with a clear challenge: “I told them, if you lose, you’re just a regular team. If you walk off, [you’re] legends,” Valdez told NJ.com.

Now, with the Group 5 State Championship on the line, Union City has the chance to cement their legacy as one of New Jersey’s elite football programs.
