March is Woman’s History month, let’s celebrate North Bergen woman’s history.

Mrs. Theresa Ferraro was a businesswoman in the township. She began working in the James Nolan Inc. Insurance Agency in the 1950s and purchased the business in 1964, keeping its name.

Mrs. Ferraro won her first election in 1999 to become the first and only woman elected to North Bergen’s Board of Commissioners.

Ferraro was also the first woman to head the North Bergen Police Department as Public Safety Commissioner, leading it to become one of the most effective and diverse police units in the state.

In 2001, Theresa V. Ferraro Senior Citizen Building was named in her honor.

Mrs. Ferraro received a “Women of Character, Courage and Commitment” award from Hudson County 2014.

Theresa Ferraro passed away in March 2015. Thank you Mrs. Ferraro for your dedication and service to North Bergen.
