North Bergen Chief Robert J. Dowd was sworn in as the President of the Hudson County Chiefs of Police Association on December 6th.
Chief Dowd is completing his 23rd year as a North Bergen Police Officer. He holds a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from NJCU. Chief Dowd was designated an Accredited Chief Executive–Chief of Police–Advanced by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. This is the highest level of accreditation a police chief can hold in NJ, and currently Chief Dowd is the only Chief of Police in Hudson County to hold this accredited status.
“Great choice! I look forward as a member of the Freeholder Public Safety Committee working with the chief on issues that we are committed to address and resolve,” writes Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Vainieri.
Established in 1957, the association consults with legislative policymakers and the County Prosecutor on issues that affect the quality of life for the citizens of Hudson County. The Association also networks with one another to ensure that the men and women of Hudson County law enforcement agencies have the tools and support they need to carry out their duties in a safe and efficient manner.
Recently, Chief Dowd was invited to the White House to discuss issues and solutions of community and police partnerships.
“You know, there’s going to have to be, on the side of criminal justice, there has to be some discussions about a not so proud task in this country: of institutionalized racism and some other problems that plague our country,” he explained. “But policing may have truly then might have been a job, where today it’s a profession and it’s led by educated leaders and young leaders who are actually engaged in our community. We believe in our community.”
