Congresswoman McIver Gives Birth to Baby Girl

Congresswoman LaMonica McIver has welcomed her second child, a baby girl, she announced.
“Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply grateful to welcome this beautiful, healthy baby into the world,” McIver said in a statement. “There really aren’t words to describe how blessed my family feels to welcome a new life into the world.”
McIver represents New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District, which includes Bayonne and part of Jersey City in Hudson County, along with Newark and other communities. She said the experience reinforced her commitment to maternal health and reproductive rights.
“Bringing a child into the world is a reminder not only of why we fight for maternal healthcare and reproductive rights, but of why we fight for the rights and freedoms of our most vulnerable,” she said.
McIver is the 15th member of Congress ever to give birth while serving. She also has a 10-year-old daughter and is among a small group of women in Congress with school-aged children.
She has publicly shared her reproductive health journey, including a battle with uterine fibroids that required multiple surgeries.
McIver said she will take October to recover and be with her family, and plans to return to voting in November. Because Congress does not provide paid maternity leave, she has supported a push to allow proxy voting for new parents.
The congresswoman is also facing federal charges stemming from an oversight visit she made to Delaney Hall, the immigration detention center in Newark. McIver has said the charges are politically motivated, and the case is ongoing. A federal appeals court recently declined to dismiss it.
