The Township of North Bergen marked a historic leadership transition as Hugo Cabrera was sworn in as the township’s first Latino mayor during an official reorganization meeting.

The ceremony took place at Nicholas J. Sacco Junior High School following the retirement of longtime Mayor Nicholas Sacco, who had led the municipality since 1991.

During the reorganization meeting, the Board of Commissioners voted to fill the vacant commissioner seat by swearing in Nick Sacco Jr. as Commissioner of Parks and Recreation. The board then voted to appoint Cabrera as mayor.

“We’re continuing to move our town forward,” Cabrera stated following his appointment. “We’re also keeping our taxes stable, and we’re going to continue to do that because our residents are the most important for us.”

Cabrera, a long-serving commissioner whose parents immigrated from Colombia, pledged to maintain public safety, infrastructure improvements, and fiscal stability across North Bergen.

Sacco announced his retirement earlier in October, endorsing Cabrera to succeed him ahead of the next municipal election scheduled for May 2027.
