Rep. Nellie Pou Presents Congressional Record Honoring NJCU President Andres Acebo

U.S. Rep. Nellie Pou presented New Jersey City University President Andres Acebo with a framed Congressional Record at her office, formally honoring his leadership at the university.

“It was great to welcome Andres Acebo, the president of New Jersey City University to my office, and present the Congressional Record recognizing his work and service to New Jersey students,” Pou said. “Thank you, Andres!”

The tribute, entered into the record of the 119th Congress on September 10, 2025, recognized Acebo’s unanimous election by the NJCU Board of Trustees as the institution’s 13th president on July 23, 2025, after first serving as interim president beginning January 17, 2023. He is the second Latino to lead a four-year public institution in New Jersey and the youngest head of a state public university.

A Union City native and first-generation son of Cuban parents, Acebo earned his bachelor’s degree from Brown University and his Juris Doctor from Rutgers Law School, where he became a published legal scholar.

Pou’s tribute noted that under Acebo’s leadership, NJCU reduced institutional debt by tens of millions of dollars and achieved three straight semesters of transfer enrollment growth. In spring 2024, 1,667 students graduated, reflecting an 8.2% increase in bachelor’s degrees over prior years.
