Robert Kearns Sworn In as Jersey City Police Chief
Robert J. Kearns was formally appointed Chief of the Jersey City Police Department during a ceremony attended by city officials, law enforcement personnel, and community members. Mayor Steven M. Fulop delivered remarks recognizing Kearns’s leadership and longstanding service.
“Bobby Kearns has been able to strike a balance of respect by the rank and file police officers, respect by other departments, and at the same time demonstrating leadership and accountability,” said Fulop. “That balance isn’t always something easy to find and to demonstrate.”
Kearns, who had served as acting chief prior to his appointment, addressed the audience following the announcement.
“This moment marks a significant milestone in my professional career, and I’m grateful for the trust and confidence you have placed in me,” said Kearns. “To my colleagues in the department, I am proud to work alongside such dedicated and courageous individuals.”
He outlined his goals as chief, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and community engagement.
“As chief, I pledge to lead with transparency, accountability, and open communication,” Kearns said. “I am committed to fostering trust between law enforcement and the community, embracing diversity, and ensuring that every resident feels safe and their voice is heard.”
Kearns also noted the importance of innovation and collaboration as the department addresses public safety concerns and community needs.
“Today, I ask each of you to join me in this mission, standing united in our dedication to justice, empathy, and service,” he said. “Together, we can create a safer, stronger, and more inclusive future for all.”
