New Director Appointed to Lead New Jersey Division of Law
Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced the appointment of Michael C. Walters as Director of the Division of Law (DOL), effective November 7. Walters had served as Acting Director since December 2024.
“Mike has focused on public service law for his entire career, and I can think of no better person to continue steering the Division and demanding accountability on behalf of New Jerseyans in the years ahead,” said Attorney General Platkin. “His dedication and integrity set a standard for both our newest employees and our veteran deputy attorneys general.”
Walters began working at DOL in 1999. Before his recent appointment, he was Deputy Director with oversight of the Litigation Practice Group, where he managed litigation strategy for cases involving the State of New Jersey, its agencies, and current and former state employees. He also served as section chief and line deputy in the Division’s Education and Higher Education Section.
“I want to thank Attorney General Platkin for trusting me to continue this important work,” said Walters. “Working for New Jersey in this capacity is an honor and I am so pleased to be supported every day by a fantastic team of professionals throughout DOL.”
Over the past year, DOL has reported results in matters involving environmental enforcement, labor law, civil rights, antitrust, consumer fraud, and government accountability. The Division staffs more than 500 attorneys and provides legal services to executive branch agencies across a range of policy areas, including child protection, banking, taxation, transportation, education, and public health.
